Grebes are small to medium-large waterbirds with lobed toes and legs placed far back on the body, making them excellent swimmers and divers but clumsy on land. They swim low in the water with only the head and neck exposed, and their feet act like oars, spreading outward and then inward to produce forward thrust. Their wing shape varies, and many species are reluctant or weak fliers; some have become flightless, with reduced wings and pectoral muscles. They eat their own feathers and feed them to their young, possibly to aid pellet formation and protect internal organs. Their ventral feathers are fur-like, and they adjust buoyancy by pressing feathers against the body. Breeding plumages are often ornate, with chestnut head markings, while non-breeding birds are plain brown and white. Many grebe species are monogamous and perform synchronized dances on the water during courtship. They build floating nests from vegetation and lay several eggs. About a third of grebe species face conservation threats, including habitat loss, invasive predatory fish, and poaching; three species have already gone extinct.

The enigmatic Juncitarsus may be close to a common ancestor of flamingos and grebes, and the extinct stem-flamingo family Palaelodidae is suggested as a transitional link. True grebes appear suddenly in the Late Oligocene or Early Miocene, around 23–25 million years ago. Their evolutionary history highlights how selective pressures in aquatic environments can produce similar adaptations in unrelated groups, while also revealing deep, unexpected relationships among bird families.
